BALL IMPACT RESISTANT LUMINAIRES

The kinetic energy of fast moving balls used in sports halls can destroy electrical equipment. Users are not only endangered by the loss of function, but also by falling parts. For this reason, the constructional requirements for sports halls in Germany are specified in the standard DIN 18032-1 “Sports halls – Halls for gymnastics, games and multipurpose use – Principles of planning and construction”. According to this standard, luminaires and their accessories, such as mounting rails and material for fixing them, must be ball-proof.
DIN 18032-3 “Gymnasiums and games, testing of ball impact resistance” and DIN 57710-13 “Luminaires with operating voltage below 1,000 V, ball impact resistant luminaires” describe the testing conditions for ball impact resistance of sports hall luminaires.
After a series of shots with a handball and a hockey ball from three directions, in which the ball hits the luminaires at an impact speed of approximately 85 km/h (handball) or 65 km/h (hockey ball), the luminaires must not show any significant damage, in particular the luminaires must not be damaged and no parts must fall off during the test. The ball symbol is given as a sign of ball safety. This can be found as an icon on the picture of each luminaire that we have successfully tested.

Unrestricted ball throwing safety is only guaranteed if the manufacturer’s instructions in the installation instructions are observed.
